Produces creamy plume-like flowers in Mid to Late Summer. Drought tolerant once established. Good space filler adding interesting texture or backdrop. Deadhead spent blooms to prevent unwanted seeding. |
Ostrich Fern
Matteucia struthiopteris H: 24" - 36" W: Spreading Full to Part Shade Zone 3 Fern species native to Alberta. Spreading clumps of upright deep green foliage. Prefers moist, humus rich soils but is somewhat drought tolerant once established, especially in the shade. Great for massing and in woodland gardens/dappled light. Fiddleheads are edible when young and tender, before fronds unfold. |
Bee Balm
Monarda H: up to 32" W: up to 32" Full Sun Zone 3 Unique fluffy flowers in scarlet to pink to white shades from Mid Summer into Fall. Loved by bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Entire plant is has strong bergamot fragrance. Has medicinal properties as a herb. Prefers well drained soil. Heat and drought tolerant once established. Can be somewhat prone to mildews so airflow and lower humidity are important. Different varieties offer varying degrees of mildew resistance. Catmint (Assorted Varieties)
Nepeta H: 6" - 24" (Variety dependent) W: 8" to Spreading (Variety dependent) Full to Part Sun Zone 3 Easy growing perennial preferring medium to dry, well-drained soils with average fertility. Purple-Blue sprays of blooms over grey-green foliage that is slightly fragrant. Blooming from Early Summer right into Fall, especially if deadheaded/ sheared occasionally. A good substitute for the less hardy Lavender. Loved by bees & butterflies and ignored by deer and rabbits. Many varieties available with myriad features (mounding, spreading, flower colour, size, etc.) with more on the market every year. Great planted en masse or in drifts in a naturalized setting or a border in a cottage garden. Drought tolerant once established. Some varieties we carry include: Walker's Low, Junior Walker, Purrsian Blue, Cat's Pajamas, Little Trudy and Kitten Around. |
Japanese Spurge
Pachysandra terminalis H: 8" W: Spreading Part to Full shade Zone 4 Slowly spreading, somewhat shrubby groundcover preferring rich moist but well-draining soils. Drought tolerant once established. Glossy, semi-evergreen foliage and small white flowers in SPRING. Very rewarding and low-maintenance groundcover with some patience. Density improves with age. Resistant to deer and rabbits. Great in a woodland setting (dappled light) or on shady slopes and hillsides. |
Peonies
Paeonia H: 24" - 36" W: 24" - 36" Full to Part Sun Zone 3 A perennial classic. Large, usually fragrant bowl shaped blooms in LATE SPRING above lush deeply divided green foliage. Ideal cut flower. Very long lived in ideal conditions (100+ years!) Prefers well drained loamy soil, will not tolerate soggy soil or standing water. Be sure to match depth in pot when planting as peonies planted too deeply will not bloom (will appear healthy otherwise.) Many varieties on the market with unique attributes. The plant and blooms are attractive to ants which in turn protect flower buds from damaging insects as they bloom so it is best to not interfere with ants found on peonies. While deadheading does not increase blooms it does redirect energy back into the plant and root system, as well as keeping the plant tidy. Cut dying blooms back to the next leaf. Wait until leaves are finished off by hard frost (or dieback completely) before cutting down in fall or wait until spring to allow as much energy back into roots as possible. 3 of the main types of peonies we carry include: Garden Peonies: (Paeonia lactiflora) What we consider "regular" peonies including some of the oldest varieties on the market. Easiest to grow. Varieties we have carried include: Catharina Fontijn, Command Performance, Coral Charm, Coral Sunset, Dublin, Edulis Superba, Festiva Maxima, Gay Paree, Inspecteur Lavergne, Karl Rosenfield, Keiv, Bowl of Beauty, Celebrity, Duchess de Nemours, Sorbet, Double Pink, Double Red, Double White and Sarah Bernhardt. Itoh Peonies: Hybrid peony varieties with the sturdy stems and large blooms of tree-peonies and the hardiness and herbaceous growth of garden peonies. Some Itoh peony varieties we have carried include: Bartzella, Callie's Memory, Cora Louise, First Arrival, Golden Treasure, Lollipop, Sequestered Sunshine and Singing in the Rain. Japanese Fern Leaf Peony (AKA: Cutleaf): Somewhat rare with uniquely fern-like, soft foliage. Slower growing peony. Most expensive type. Only 2 or 3 varieties on the market. We have carried single and double blooming types in very limited quantities each year. |
Poppies
Papaver H: 12" - 24" (with flower) W: up to 24" Full Sun Zone 3 Very showy papery flowers above low basal foliage in SUMMER. Can bloom all summer if flowers cut regularly right from the start. Preferring deep well drained loamy soil on the dry side and an open sunny location. Provide regular water first season, once established poppies usually only require regular watering during blooming. Allow foliage to dieback on own. Great long lasting cut flower. Doesn't like to be moved once established. Performs both as perennial and biennial, self seeding readily in ideal conditions. The 2 main types of Poppies that we carry include: Oriental Poppy (Papaver orientale): Larger blooms and longer blooming period, foliage dies back after flowering completed. More tolerant of moist soils (relative). Stronger perennial habit but will also self seed in ideal conditions. Reliable and showy bloomer. Oriental Poppy varieties that we have carried include: Brilliant and Fruit Punch. Icelandic Poppy (Papaver nudicaule): Smaller but abundant blooms and a shorter blooming period. Prefers cooler location and is less tolerant of excess moisture (than Oriental Poppy) Strong seeding habit in ideal conditions, will often pop up in other locations. Icelandic Poppy varieties we have carried include: Champagne Bubbles. |
Canby's Mountain Lover / Cliff Green
Paxistima canbyi H: up to 12" W: Spreading Part Shade to Full Sun Zone 3 Slow spreading shrubby groundcover with dark green glossy, semi-evergreen needle-like foliage. Best with some protection from afternoon heat as well as good snow cover in winter. Prefers rich, well drained soils but is quite soil adaptable. Very dense and tidy with no maintenance required. Leathery foliage sometimes turns bronze in Fall/Winter. |
Beard Tongue
Penstemon digitalis H: up to 32" (with flower) W: up to 18" Full Sun Zone 3 Upright form with clusters of tubular blooms along sturdy stems over foliage in LATE SPRING to EARLY SUMMER. Long blooming. Most varieties available have bronzy-green to purple basal foliage. Prefers well drained average soils but will tolerate clay if not constantly wet. Drought tolerant once established. Attracts bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other beneficial insects. Resistant to deer. Will not tolerate cold wet soils in winter or very early spring. Great in naturalized or prairie gardens. Varieties we have carried include: Blackbeard, Purple Riding Hood, Husker Red and Alberta native; Slender Beardtongue. |
Russian Sage
Perovskia (Salvia yangii) H: 24" - 42" S: 24" - 42" Full Sun Zone 3 Large, fragrant somewhat woody perennial with silver-green foliage. Long blooming spikes of lavender-like flowers in EARLY SUMMER until EARLY FALL. Drought, heat and salt tolerant. Prefers poor/sandy soil with low fertility and very good drainage. Deer resistant. Despite it's woody stems this plant dies all the way to the ground each winter so should be cut down each Fall or Spring. Varieties we have carried include: Blue Jean Baby, Blue Steel, Crazy Blue, Lacey Blue, Little Spire, Rocketman, Silvery Blue and Sage Advice. |
Fleeceflowers
Persicaria H: 10" - 60" (Variety Dependant) W: 24" to Spreading Full Sun to Part Shade Zone 3 Moisture & clay tolerant perennial with either low/spreading or large upright form depending on . Adaptable and easy to grow. Deer and rabbit resistant. Somewhat drought tolerant once established but watering is important within first season after planting. We carry 2 general types of Lesser Fleeceflower (Persicaria affinis): Low/spreading form with white to pink spiklet blooms above glossy green foliage from LATE SPRING into FALL (especially if deadheaded). Foliage turns bronze in fall/winter. Varieties we have carried include: Dimity, Superba, Giant Fleeceflower (Persicaria polymorpha): Very large upright form with large panicles of creamy white blooms in MID-SUMMER to FALL. Heat & humidity tolerant once established. |
Forever Pink Hybrid Phlox
Phlox glaberrima var. triflora 'Forever Pink' H: 6" - 12" W: 12" - 20" Full Sun Zone 3 Taller than moss phlox but not upright. Prefers prefers a moist, well-drained soil, but it is drought tolerant once established. Covered in pink flowers from EARLY SUMMER until EARLY FALL. Good resistance to powdery mildew. |
Garden Phlox / Tall Phlox (Assorted Varieties & Colours)
Phlox paniculata H: 24" W: 16" Full sun Zone 4 Upright clump form producing showy, fragrant blooms above foliage in MID to LATE SUMMER. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Prefers fertile soil with good drainage and consistent soil moisture. Can be susceptible to powdery mildew so good air circulation is important. Deadheading will encourage rebloom. Tall and compact varieties available. Varieties we have carried include: Blue Boy, Blue Paradise, David, Laura, Orange Perfection and the Flame series (Blue, Coral, Red & White) |
Creeping Phlox / Moss Phlox (Assorted Varieties & Colours)
Phlox subulata H: 4" - 6" W: up to 24" Full Sun Zone 3 Low mat forming with needle-like semi-evergreen foliage and covered in blooms in MID-LATE SPRING that attract butterflies. Prefers fertile soil with good drainage and consistent soil moisture. Can be susceptible to powdery mildew so good air circulation is important. Deer resistant and salt tolerant. Varieties we have carried include: Candy Stripe, Eye Caramba, Eye Caramba, Purple Beauty, Red Wings, Scarlet Flame, Snowflake, White Delight and Emerald Cushion Blue. |
Chinese Lantern
Physalis alkekengi H: 12" - 24" W: 12" to spreading Full Sun to Part Shade Zone 3 Easy grower forming sporadic colonies. Inconspicuous green foliage and small insignificant white flowers are followed by fruit in eye catching orange, papery "lanterns" in LATE SUMMER into FALL. Related to ground cherry but not considered edible. Tends to pop up around the garden (places other than where planted intentionally) from extensive root systems but are easily removed. Most part of the plant is toxic if ingested. |
Obediant Plant / False Dragonhead
Physostegia virginiana H: 24" - 42" W: 24" to Spreading Full Sun to Light Shade Vigorous perennial sometimes requiring containment. Producing spike flowers in LATE SUMMER to FALL. Prefers fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soils but is fairly soil adaptable. Tolerates excessive moisture. Stems tend to flop in too much shade or hot summer temperatures. Deer resistant and loved by bees and butterflies. Varieties we have carried include: Autumn Carnival, Crystal White Peaks, and Vivid. |
Balloon Flower
Platycodon grandiflorus H: 12" - 24" W: 12" - 24" Full Sun to Light Shade Zone 3 Compact perennial producing large balloon-like flower buds open to large bell shaped flowers all SUMMER. Prefers evenly moist loamy soils on the lighter side with good drainage. Late to emerge in spring so marking where this plant is in the garden to prevent damaging in spring can be helpful. Deadhead for more blooms! Benefits from protection from the hottest sun of the day. Avoid moving or root disturbance once established, tuberous root system is easily damaged and can be difficult to transplant. Deadheading extends blooming. Trimming/pinching back plant in spring can prevent floppy stems when blooming. |
Jacob's Ladder
Polemonium reptans H: 16" - 24" W: 24" to Spreading Part Shade to Full Sun Zone 3 Vigorous semi-upright with green or variegated foliage (dependent on variety). Spreads easily. Produces small fragrant baby-blue flowers above mound of ferny foliage in MID to LATE-SPRING. Prefers adequately moist soil and cooler growing conditions especially if in full sun. Deer resistant. Self seeds readily, can be prevented with deadheading. Varieties we have carried include: Bressingham Purple, Bris D'Anjou, Stairway to Heaven and Touch of Class. |
Solomon's Seal & Variegated Solomon's Seal
Polygonatum H: 24" - 36" W: 36" to Spreading Part to Full Shade Zone 3 Slowly spreading clump Elegant arching foliage producing small greenish-white dangling flowers in LATE SPRING/EARLY SUMMER. Well suited to a woodland garden as it prefers dappled/filtered light and cooler temperatures. Prefers moist, humus/organically rich soils. Tolerates excessively moist soils and is drought tolerant once established. Foliage used in floristry, particularly the variegated varieties. |
Nuuk Potentilla
Potentilla tridentata ‘Nuuk’ H: 4" W: 10" - 16" Full to Part Sun Zone 3 Forms a low mat of shiny semi-evergreen leaves, bearing small white flowers in LATE SPRING and EARLY SUMMER that resemble little buttercups. Foliage turns wine and bronze shades in the colder months. Prefers very well-drained, sandy/rocky soils. Drought tolerant once established. Easily divided in spring or early fall. Deer Resistant. Great in a rock or alpine garden. |
Primula / Japanese Primrose (Assorted Colours)
Primula japonica H: 8" - 12" (with flower) W: 8" - 12" Part Sun to Full Shade Zone 3 Prefers fertile organically rich consistently moist soil. Will tolerate excess moisture but does best with average drainage. Produces whorls of flowers atop stout stems above basal lettuce looking foliage in LATE-SPRING to EARLY-SUMMER. Self-seeds somewhat readily. Attracts butterflies and is deer resistant. Will tolerate full sun in a cooler location. Looks great planted en masse, waterside or in damp woodland gardens. Varieties we have carried include: Exhibition Mix and Millar's Crimson. |
Lungwort / Bethlehem Sage
Pulmonaria sacharata - in variety H: up to 12" W: up to 24" Part to Full Shade Zone 3 Low mounding to slow spreading form. Produces clusters of small pinkish-purple flowers in EARLY SPRING. Spotted foliage provides interest all season. Prefers cool, organically rich, evenly moist but well-drained soils. Soils must not be allowed to dry out but also will not tolerate standing water or overly soggy soil. Spreads very slowly by creeping roots, but is not invasive. Varieties we have carried include: Mrs. Moon, Majeste and Little Star. |
Pasque Flower
Pulsatilla vulgaris (Anemone pulsatilla) H: 12" - 18" (with flower) W: 12" Full Sun Zone 3 Small fuzzy perennial flowering EARLY SPRING. Prefers well-drained fertile soil. Good drainage is essential. Does not tolerate root disturbance or too much fertilization. Flowers are followed by attractive fuzzy seedheads. May self-seed in ideal conditions. Soft ferny foliage remains attractive after flowering complete. Drought tolerant when established. Varieties we have carried include: White, Purple and Red. Related to Alberta native Prairie Crocus (Anemone patens). Which is occasionally available. |
Ornamental Rhubarb / Chinese Rhubarb
Rheum palmatum var. tanguticum H: 36"+ W: 36"+ Full Sun to Part Shade Zone 4 Grown mainly for its large architectural leaves. Produces feathery plume flowers atop tall stalks from LATE-SPRING to MID-SUMMER. Unlike it's edible cousin; Ornamental Rhubarb should not be consumed, may cause severe discomfort if ingested. |

Some new varieties have been developed to not produce flower (groundcover only). Excellent for dry, sunny slopes, poor soil and erosion control. |
Meadow Rue
Thalictrum delavayi H: up to 42" W: up to 24" Full sun to part sun Produces dainty panicles of purple star-shaped flowers rising above the foliage in EARLY SUMMER. Prefers average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is particular about its soil conditions, with a strong preference for rich, acidic soils. The flowers are excellent for cutting. Attracts bees & butterflies. |
Creeping Thyme
Thymus serpyllum & praecox H: 4" or less W: spreading Full Sun Slow spreading groundcover, comes in varieties with some minor differences. Covered in pinkish to purple blooms from SPRING to LATE SUMMER. Tolerant of light foot-traffic and fragrant when trod upon and can even be mowed. Prefers well drained soil. |

Periwinkle
Vinca Minor H: Less than 3" W: Spreading Full Sun to Full Shade VERY low growing groundcover or trailing perennial. Semi-evergreen glossy green foliage is also available in variegated variety. Soil adaptable but requires adequate moisture when planted in full sun. In shade, good drainage is more important. Can be finicky to get established but becomes quite vigorous once settled. Small periwinkle-blue flowers emerge sporadically in SPRING. Trails nicely over a wall or use on a slope to help control erosion. |
